FRIENDS OF SOUTH AWARDS 3 GRANTS
September 6, 2018
Three grants, up to $3,000 were awarded at the beginning of the school year from funds raised during the Hall of Fame dinner and Auction last November. One grant was awarded to athletics, one to academics and one to the arts. Coaches and teachers who were interested in applying for the grant were asked to complete an application form and provide budgetary details for their program. The grant selection committee selected the following for this inaugural year:
Athletics Grant
Friends of South awarded $3,000 to the South Eugene Track and Field team for a set of 10 new starting blocks. They’re $300 a piece and will make a really big difference to the team. The old starting blocks are pretty wobbly and old. New starting blocks make a key difference in both practice and race situations for South’s fastest runners.
Academics Grant
Friends of South funded the purchase of equipment needed for the new Studio Audio Engineering Course for the school which is a critical technical skills addition to South’s curriculum! The class will start being offered Winter Term this year, so we’re excited to here more about how the equipment is used and the skills kids are gaining in Audio Engineering.
Arts Grant
We awarded the South Eugene Band Program nearly $3,000 to purchase new Pep Band Percussion instruments!
Doug Doerfert requires that every band member volunteer a certain number of hours to play at football and basketball games throughout the year. New percussion instruments make the pep band that much peppier! And are really important to Doug’s goal of teaching kids service through music.
